It was built from fall 1897 to May 1898, with a tool shed added in 1950.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is the only nineteenth-century building still used for village government in the Waynesville/Corwin area, and it keeps an original single-cell lockup. It also reflects the 1930s \"Petticoat Politics\" era, when women held the main elected offices. It is presented as a well-preserved building type still used for council meetings.","narrative":"Corwin's council house and jail is a small clapboard building, seventeen by thirty feet, on a limestone foundation with a standing-seam metal roof. Village council ordered it in 1897 after buying a lot for $100, and contractor Thomas Zell won the job with a bid of $361.50. It opened in May 1898. The front room served as council chamber and mayor's office, while the rear room held the marshal's office and an iron single-cell jail ordered from a Detroit firm. Original wood floors, plaster walls, trim with rosettes and a brass mayor's railing survive. Council has met there monthly since 1898, and the jail was used for law enforcement for more than ninety years. The building is also tied to the 1930s, when Corwin drew press attention for electing women to nearly all major offices, including its first woman mayor in Warren County. A 1950 tool shed on the lot also contributes.","period_of_significance":"1898 - 1950","architect_builder":"Zell, Thomas","architectural_style":"No Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used for monthly council meetings and as the mayor's office; the rear jail room is now used for storage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.343992-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/01000589.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000589/63ce745655-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000589/63ce745655-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Corwin_Council_House_and_Jail.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Corwin_Council_House_and_Jail.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991863","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138754271"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/warren-county/corwin-council-house-and-jail-01000589/"}
