It was built in 1844 in Greek Revival style and altered in 1896.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is a finely intact example of nineteenth-century ecclesiastical design in the Helderberg region. It combines a Greek Revival building form with a later Romanesque entry/bell tower and a lavish Queen Anne style wood interior. It shows how a rural church evolved with the tastes and prosperity of its congregation and community.","narrative":"Gallupville United Methodist Church is a small, nearly square wooden church on Factory Street in the crossroads hamlet of Gallupville, in the town of Wright, Schoharie County. The congregation was incorporated in March 1844 and bought its lot from Frederick and Magdalene Shafer that September, with construction starting the same year. The original building followed Greek Revival proportions, with elongated windows, broad corner boards, a wide frieze and a fully pedimented gable. In 1896 a Romanesque style entry and bell tower was added, the balcony was removed, and stained glass replaced the multi-light sash. The interior was also sheathed in oak matchstick boards laid in diagonal and horizontal patterns, giving a Queen Anne character. Oak pews, a Gothic style altar table, chairs and lectern remain. The church was listed for its architecture, as a rare and largely unchanged rural church that records changing tastes between 1844 and 1896.","period_of_significance":"1844-1896","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival; Late Victorian/Romanesque","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as religious facility, and the church is described as virtually intact from its period of significance.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.449659-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01000584.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000584/b57797f701-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000584/b57797f701-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, Upstate New York, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gallupville_Methodist_Church_Jan_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, Upstate New York, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gallupville_Methodist_Church_Jan_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321743","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallupville_Methodist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5519239"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schoharie-county/gallupville-methodist-church-01000584/"}
