It is noted for its picturesque tower and spire, a Ruskinian-inspired porch and an intact open-truss nave. It is described as the finest example of ecclesiastical architecture in Camillus.","narrative":"Along Genesee Street, a few blocks east of the business district of Camillus, stands a brick church built in 1879-1880 for a Baptist congregation first organized in 1804. Archimedes Russell, a prolific Syracuse architect, designed it in the Victorian Gothic style. It has a steep gabled nave, a corner bell tower with a tall pyramidal spire, and a north porch with an ogival arch carried on polished marble columns and trimmed with alternating stone and brick voussoirs. Inside, an open wooden truss ceiling spans the nave, and the windows keep their original geometric stained glass. A frame church built in 1851 previously occupied the site. Construction cost $12,000, against an original commission of $8,000. Lightning started a fire in 1968 that badly damaged the interior, and restoration was completed the next year. The building is valued as a well-preserved example of Russell's mature work and as the finest ecclesiastical building in Camillus.","period_of_significance":"1879-1880","architect_builder":"Russell, Archimedes, architect, Syracuse, NY","architectural_style":"Late Victorian / High Victorian Gothic","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a church; described as carefully maintained and retaining a high degree of integrity. The roof was re-covered in asphalt shingles over the original slates, and the pews were replaced after a 1968 fire.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.975066-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01000573.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000573/e99b5c0590-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000573/e99b5c0590-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FirstBaptistChurchOfCamillus2007_12_14.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FirstBaptistChurchOfCamillus2007_12_14.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320343","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Baptist_Church_of_Camillus","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5452456"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/first-baptist-church-of-camillus-01000573/"}
