Australia Lane in the village of Hatteras, Dare County, on North Carolina's Outer Banks, built by Ellsworth and Lovie Ballance.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a well-preserved example of a characteristic Hatteras house form built by prosperous fishing families in the early twentieth century. Only five of at least fifteen such houses remain in the village, and this one is among the best preserved and the only one completely restored.","narrative":"Built around 1915 by fisherman Ellsworth B. Ballance and his wife Lovie, this two-story, T-shaped frame house sits on a third-of-an-acre lot in the unplatted village of Hatteras on the Outer Banks. It has board-and-batten siding, a wood shingle roof, brick piers, a turned-post front porch and two-over-two sash windows. The main block is one room deep, with a two-room ell holding the dining room and kitchen. Inside, the original board walls, pine floors and doors survive. The house is significant for architecture as an example of a form favored by Hatteras fishing families between 1890 and 1920, which kept the traditional separation of cooking and dining from sleeping and living areas. At least fifteen such houses stood before 1940, but only five remain. Restored in recent years to its ca. 1915 appearance, this house is the only one of them completely restored, and it retains a high level of integrity.","period_of_significance":"1915","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"OTHER: Two-story T-plan house","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function is single family dwelling; the house was restored to its ca. 1915 appearance beginning in 1999.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.184992-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/87/7198/47719887/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/01000558.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000558/7a3e7770b5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000558/7a3e7770b5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jasonspsyche","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ellsworth_and_Lovie_Ballance_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jasonspsyche</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ellsworth_and_Lovie_Ballance_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719887","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellsworth_and_Lovie_Ballance_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18205414"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/dare-county/ballance-ellsworth-and-lovie-house-01000558/"}
