It is also a showpiece of the work of Edgar Allan Poe, a prominent Lenoir builder/architect and four-term mayor. It is described as the most intact Dutch Colonial Revival house in Lenoir from the first decade of the twentieth century.","narrative":"Built in 1905 on a half-acre lot along North Main Street in Lenoir, this two-story Dutch Colonial Revival house was designed and built by Edgar Allan Poe as his family home. Poe was a lawyer, four-term mayor and prolific builder whose projects included the 1903 Caldwell County Courthouse and several downtown commercial buildings. The house has a gambrel roof, a gambrel dormer, a wraparound porch and a rear kitchen wing. Inside, the central stair hall features cove ceilings, an oak staircase with hand-carved balustrade and newel posts, paneled wainscot and beaded crown molding, apparently meant as a showpiece of Poe's skill. Though some interior finishes were removed during renovation, the form, plan, staircase, mantels and wainscot remain intact. The house was listed for architecture because it is one of the few unaltered houses on a once-prestigious residential street and the most intact early Dutch Colonial Revival example in Lenoir.","period_of_significance":"1905","architect_builder":"Poe, Edgar Allan, builder","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (Dutch Colonial Revival)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Under renovation at the time of nomination; the original porch balustrade was being restored, and the original weatherboard had recently been uncovered from beneath aluminum siding.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.392564-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/77/7193/47719377/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/01000514.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000514/29599ae3b4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000514/29599ae3b4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Loudounva57","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edgar_Allan_Poe_House,_Lenoir,_North_Carolina.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Loudounva57</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edgar_Allan_Poe_House,_Lenoir,_North_Carolina.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719377","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Allan_Poe_House_(Lenoir,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5337101"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/caldwell-county/poe-edgar-allan-house-01000514/"}
