It is also significant under Criterion C as a rare surviving Craftsman-style passenger station with intact interiors, furnishings, operating equipment and freight scales.","narrative":"Rowland Depot is a brick railroad station at Main and Railroad streets in Rowland, North Carolina. Built in 1925 for the Atlantic Coast Line Rail Road, it replaced an 1889 board-and-batten station that had been moved about forty feet after a car struck it. The L-shaped building has a hipped roof with wide overhangs on Craftsman-style triangular brackets, six-over-six windows, and a projecting bay where the agent watched the tracks. Inside are twin waiting rooms, built for white and Black passengers, a central office and a rear freight warehouse with iron scales. Desks, timetables, signal controls and lighting remain in place. Rowland grew up around the railroad after the first train arrived in 1888, and the line made the town a shipping point for farm produce and livestock. The depot was recognized for its place in that transportation and community history and for its well-preserved Craftsman design. It now serves as a museum, with a modern caboose nearby.","period_of_significance":"1925-1951","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function is museum; the depot retains original furnishings, equipment and a high degree of integrity. A recently built caboose beside it is non-contributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.639152-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/58/7219/47721958/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/01000511.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000511/c993faac60-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000511/c993faac60-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Ammodramus","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rowland,_NC_depot_from_S_2.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Ammodramus</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rowland,_NC_depot_from_S_2.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"04001582","name":"Rowland Main Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/rowland-main-street-historic-district-04001582/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721958","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rowland_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19877624"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/robeson-county/rowland-depot-01000511/"}
