It contains 127 contributing resources, including 18th- to early 20th-century houses, barns, industrial buildings and structures.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the district is significant under Criterion A for its agricultural development from the late 18th to mid-19th century, for milling and quarrying powered by the Schuylkill River and feeder streams, and for its association with railroad transportation. It is also argued to meet Criterion C for its range of regional architectural styles and Criterion D for industrial and domestic sites that may yield information about German-heritage communities.","narrative":"Along the Schuylkill River in northwestern Philadelphia, extending into Montgomery County, this district preserves a landscape of eighteenth- to early twentieth-century farms, mills, quarries, estate houses and rail-related structures. Settlement began in the early 1700s, principally by people of German heritage, and paper milling was the earliest and later dominant industry, beginning with Anthony Newhouse's mill at Trout Run in the second quarter of the eighteenth century. The Riverside Mills complex grew from a front volume built in 1792 into a large nineteenth-century complex begun by Edwin R. Cope in 1856. Soapstone and schist quarries supplied stone, and the Philadelphia, Germantown and Norristown Railroad, opened through the district in 1835, brought wealthy Philadelphians who built summer estates. Its high degree of integrity distinguishes it from neighboring riverside areas. Mid-nineteenth-century Italianate and Queen Anne houses, workers' houses and barns illustrate its architectural range.","period_of_significance":"1720-1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial; Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival, Italianate, Romanesque Revival; Late Victorian: Queen Anne; Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Classical Revival, Arts and Crafts, Tudor Revival, Pueblo, Bungalow","criteria":["A","C","D"],"status_note":"Historic agricultural and industrial activities have almost all ceased, and the district is now primarily residential; the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education maintains the core as a nature preserve.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.358945-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/01000463.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000463/082cab7ec5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000463/082cab7ec5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UPPER_ROXBOROUGH_HISTORIC_DISTRICT,_MONTGOMERY_COUNTY,_PA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71996926","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper_Roxborough_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7898886"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/philadelphia/upper-roxborough-historic-district-01000463/"}
