Tompkins Company's Dilworth Shops.","why_significant":"It is an important example of the textile-related industries that made Charlotte the Southeast's leading producer of textile machinery. It is also tied to founder Daniel A. Tompkins, an industrialist, New South promoter, newspaper owner and author. It is the only surviving building of the Tompkins Company's manufacturing facilities.","narrative":"Built in 1904 and 1905 at 1900 South Boulevard in Charlotte's Dilworth neighborhood, this two-story brick building served as the principal machine shop of the D.A. Tompkins Company. The firm made textile machinery and equipment, and it dominated that field in the Southeast as cotton mills multiplied across the Piedmont. The shop was among the earliest factories in Dilworth's industrial district along the Southern Railway corridor. It originally stood with a foundry and boiler house, but it is now the only survivor of the company's manufacturing facilities. Its founder, Daniel A. Tompkins (1852-1914), was an engineer, mill builder, newspaper owner, author and promoter of Southern industrialization and technical education. The building has mill-construction interior framing, open production rooms, brick pilasters and corbelled cornices. Later changes include an office section added across the front, a rear freight platform, infilled windows and a rebuilt boiler house. At the time of listing it was undergoing certified rehabilitation.","period_of_significance":"1905-1929","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A","B"],"status_note":"Undergoing certified rehabilitation at the time of nomination; the interior was most recently used for commercial purposes, and the modern ell is scheduled for removal.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.417556-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/74/7213/47721374/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/01000422.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000422/c0ab43adc3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000422/c0ab43adc3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Big Wang","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Former_Daniel_A._Tompkins_Company_Machine_Shop.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Wang</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Former_Daniel_A._Tompkins_Company_Machine_Shop.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721374","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Former_Daniel_A._Tompkins_Company_Machine_Shop","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20745519"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/mecklenburg-county/tompkins-daniel-a-company-machine-shop-former-01000422/"}
