Main Street in downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina, occupying a full city block. It was built between 1963 and 1966 and designed by Albert B. Cameron of Cameron Associates.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an icon of mid-twentieth-century modern commercial architecture in North Carolina and an excellent example of the Miesian International Style. It was the tallest building in North Carolina and briefly in the Southeast. It was also the first major downtown project since 1929 and a catalyst for later commercial construction in Winston-Salem.","narrative":"Rising thirty stories over a full downtown block at 301 N. Main Street, this Winston-Salem office tower was built between 1963 and 1966 for developer Dwight L. Phillips's Northwest Corporation, with Wachovia Bank and Trust Company as its main tenant. Charlotte architect Albert B. Cameron designed it in the Miesian International Style: a steel frame wrapped in a curtain wall of stainless steel mullions, bronze-tinted glass and pale opaque spandrel panels, set on a white cast-stone base and a raised granite-paved plaza. When completed it was the tallest building in North Carolina and, briefly, in the Southeast. It was also the first major downtown construction since the Reynolds Building of 1929, and it encouraged further commercial building in the city center for decades. The interior was designed for flexible tenant layouts and has been remodeled often, but the service core and the exterior remain largely intact.","period_of_significance":"1963-1966","architect_builder":"Cameron Associates (Albert B. Cameron) - architect; C.P. Street Construction Company - contractor","architectural_style":"International Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Exterior largely unaltered; interior repeatedly remodeled. Wachovia Bank left the building in the late 1990s, and the rooftop Wachovia lettering was removed in 1998.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:52.782325-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/92/7201/47720192/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/01000376.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000376/2727d616eb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000376/2727d616eb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ildar Sagdejev (Specious)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2009-04-24_Winston_Tower.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ildar Sagdejev (Specious)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2009-04-24_Winston_Tower.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100008467","name":"Downtown Winston-Salem Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/downtown-winston-salem-historic-district-100008467/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720192","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_Tower","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8026138"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/forsyth-county/wachovia-building-01000376/"}
