It is also significant under Criterion A in agriculture for showing, through surviving buildings, the transforming role of bright leaf tobacco on the county landscape in the early twentieth century.","narrative":"Green Level is a crossroads community of about 75 acres in western Wake County, just east of the Chatham County line. Centered on Green Level Church Road, it includes two stores, a Baptist church with its cemetery, a Masonic lodge, and nine dwellings, three of them part of farmsteads. Roots of the settlement reach to the early nineteenth century along the old Raleigh to Pittsboro stage route, and by the early 1870s it had several stores, mills, schools, a church and a lodge. Most surviving buildings date from the later prosperity of bright leaf tobacco farming. Notable resources include the 1907 Gothic Revival church, the 1916 Mills house and store, and the Council farm with its packhouse and log curing barns. The district was listed for its architectural value as an intact crossroads village and for its agricultural history. Despite suburban growth nearby, it keeps its rural setting, and its period of significance runs through 1945, when the last store was built.","period_of_significance":"Late nineteenth century to 1945","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival, Late Victorian, Colonial Revival, No style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Largely intact and still rural; the Mills store houses an antiques business, the community store houses a nursery and landscaping business, and the Masonic lodge and church remain active.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.895462-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/93/7185/47718593/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/01000340.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718593","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Level,_Wake_County,_North_Carolina","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5602803"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/green-level-historic-district-01000340/"}
