It is also tied to a succession of prominent Billerica farming families, including the Duttons, Kidders, Davises and Holdens. The surviving farm features and the house's gradual growth illustrate the life of a local farmstead.","narrative":"Set on a 1.65-acre lot at 28 Pond Street in Billerica, this farmhouse began in the mid-1700s as a center-chimney building and grew over time into a five-bay, 2 1/2-story saltbox with a rear lean-to. A long east wing was added around 1800-1810, ending in a two-story carriage house and shoemaker's shop. The timber frame, fieldstone foundation and plastered, paneled interiors show typical Middlesex County construction. The southwest chamber has fluted pilasters, raised-field paneling and a dentiled cornice in the Georgian manner. Other features include a chicken coop, fieldstone walls and a nineteenth-century hitching post. The land was once part of a larger farm held by the Dutton family, then by neighbors Thomas Kidder and Joshua Davis, all prominent in town affairs. Later it passed to the Holden family. Architectural evidence suggests construction between 1750 and 1770, rather than the earlier date long assumed, so the house is valued for its preserved fabric and farm setting.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial: Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the form lists current function as domestic single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.820376-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/44/7957/63795744/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/01000307.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000307/cc62772e65-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000307/cc62772e65-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dutton-Holden_Homestead,_Billerica_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dutton-Holden_Homestead,_Billerica_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795744","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutton%E2%80%93Holden_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5317547"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/dutton-holden-homestead-01000307/"}
