It housed visitors who came by train to conduct business at the county courthouse.","narrative":"This two-story, wood-framed hotel at 118 South Main Street in Reidsville was built in 1908 by Zachary Smith, a farmer, sawmill operator and contractor. It replaced an earlier Smith hotel on the same site that was destroyed by a deliberately set fire. The building follows a Georgian plan, with a central hall and two rooms on each side, and has a hipped roof with center gables and a wrap-around porch with machine-turned posts and brackets in the Folk Victorian manner. Inside, tongue-and-groove pine paneling and classical mantels survive. A kitchen wing was added in the 1950s. The Nelson family, in-laws of the Smiths, took over management in 1913. The hotel served jurors, traveling salesmen and others who came by train to do business at the county courthouse a block away, and it was one of only two hotels serving the county seat. It was valued for its architectural integrity and its commercial role, and it reopened as a bed and breakfast in 1997.","period_of_significance":"1908-1950","architect_builder":"Zach Smith","architectural_style":"Other/Folk Victorian (Georgian-type house with Folk Victorian detailing)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function is hotel/inn; the hotel is believed to have ceased operation in the mid 1980s and reopened as a bed and breakfast inn in 1997.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.309729-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/01000305.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000305/6ef5440847-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000305/6ef5440847-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smith-Nelson_Hotel,_Reidsville,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smith-Nelson_Hotel,_Reidsville,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209580","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith-Nelson_Hotel","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16900305"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/tattnall-county/smith-nelson-hotel-01000305/"}
