The house was built between 1820 and 1822 for the Mead family.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that the property is a locally important example of a Federal period vernacular farmhouse. It was built for the Mead family, early settlers of Waccabuc who once owned several hundred acres and built several residences. The house retains its original location, form, frame, footprint and much of its original floor plan and woodwork.","narrative":"Set at the corner of Mead Street and Schoolhouse Road in the hamlet of Waccabuc, this farmhouse was built between 1820 and 1822 by Alphred Mead, son of early settler Enoch Mead. The ell, with its large cooking fireplaces, was probably built first, and the larger main block followed within a year or two. The house is four bays wide, with shingled walls, a stone foundation, 12-over-12 windows, hewn timbers, and verandahs with shallow hip roofs on the street side. Inside, carved mantels and fluted door pilasters survive. A six-acre parcel holds a mid-19th-century barn, a c. 1901 cottage, a well house, a former dog kennel, and a chicken house. The property was recognized as a locally important Federal period vernacular farmhouse. It retains its original location, frame and footprint, and its restored summer kitchen has a cooking fireplace and bake oven. The Mead family left a lasting mark on the hamlet.","period_of_significance":"c. 1820","architect_builder":"unknown (the text says it was built by Alphred Mead)","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling. The form states all the buildings are in use, though the chicken house roof is largely rotted.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.590891-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01000294.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000294/67cfe5e314-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000294/67cfe5e314-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Janet Andersen","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:36_Mead_Street_from_angle.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Janet Andersen</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:36_Mead_Street_from_angle.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"15000236","name":"Waccabuc Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/waccabuc-historic-district-15000236/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323061","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Homestead_(Waccabuc,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7740099"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/homestead-the-01000294/"}
