The nominated property also includes a board-and-batten carriage barn, a period urn and about a quarter acre of land.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an intact, representative example of early Italianate residential architecture in Tioga County. It shows later Stick and Queen Anne modifications and a transitional interior drawn from Greek Revival sources. It was also the home of John Wesley McCarty, a local banker and Mason, until his death in 1915.","narrative":"Built around 1850 on Main Street in the Village of Candor, this brick house is an early example of Italianate architecture in Tioga County. It has a two-story block with a shallow hipped roof, a one-story rear wing and a bold bracketed cornice. Later in the nineteenth century an enclosed entrance vestibule was added with Stick and Queen Anne decoration, while the interior keeps Greek Revival woodwork and an Italianate marble fireplace. A board-and-batten carriage barn and a period urn complete the property. The house was the home of John Wesley McCarty until his death in 1915. He served as vice president of The First National Bank of Candor from 1865 and as senior deacon of the local Masonic lodge from 1857. The house was listed for its architecture, as a largely unaltered record of changing tastes in a small village shaped by the arrival of the railroads.","period_of_significance":"circa 1850- circa 1880","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate; Late Victorian: Queen Anne, Stick; Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently in use as a single dwelling; the form notes the building was in poor condition before its current ownership and has had some modern renovations to the rear wing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.471622-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01000249.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000249/3cf1158a38-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000249/3cf1158a38-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:J_W_McCarty.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:J_W_McCarty.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322443","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_W._McCarty_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6262399"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tioga-county/mccarty-john-w-house-01000249/"}
