Built in 1812 as the first Lewis County Courthouse, it later became the Martin Institute school and then the town hall.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is the oldest public building in Lewis County and an example of an early 19th century Georgian-inspired civic building with sensitive Victorian alterations. It is also a relatively unaltered timber frame structure with fine joinery. It is tied to Gen. Walter Martin, founder of Martinsburg, who pushed for the courthouse, and to the county's settlement, government and social history.","narrative":"Built in 1812 on a knoll in Martinsburg, this clapboard building began as the first Lewis County Courthouse and is the oldest public building in the county. Gen. Walter Martin, the town's founder, donated the site and money for its construction, with the condition that it revert to his estate if it ceased to serve public purposes. When the county seat moved to Lowville in the 1860s, the building passed to the town. From about 1870 to 1888 it housed the Martin Institute, a school, and received Italianate alterations including a projecting entrance pavilion, paired windows and a standing-seam metal roof. Federal details such as Palladian windows, modillioned cornices and pedimented gables were retained. The town acquired full title in 1891 and has used the building as its town hall since. The upstairs courtroom became an auditorium with a stage, which has hosted plays, dances, dinners and sports. A 1937 WPA project modernized the electrical service and stage, and the building remains in community use.","period_of_significance":"1812-1950","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal; Late Victorian/Italianate","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Still owned by the Town of Martinsburg and used as the town hall and a community gathering site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.313513-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/01000241.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000241/343fb23bae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000241/343fb23bae-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Allan Green","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Martinsburg_Town_Hall.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Allan Green</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Martinsburg_Town_Hall.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318590","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martinsburg_Town_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6777223"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/lewis-county/martinsburg-town-hall-01000241/"}
