Wilsey of Indiana. The 1.4-acre nominated parcel includes a well-house and two non-historic barns.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a good example of a relatively rare vernacular \"pyramid cottage\" farmhouse, with an unusual variation of tall cross gables and board-and-batten siding. It keeps nearly all of its original mantels, doors, windows and woodwork. It is also a surviving example of a farmhouse built outside town by a Union veteran in the Fitzgerald veterans' colony.","narrative":"Built around 1900 on the edge of Fitzgerald, Georgia, this one-story wood-frame farmhouse with a finished attic was put up by Miles V. Wilsey, a Union veteran from Posey County, Indiana, who came south when Fitzgerald was founded as a colony for Civil War veterans in 1895. The house has two front doors, porches on three sides, a nearly pyramidal roof, tall cross gables with fish-scale shingles, and rare board-and-batten siding on the lower floor. Inside, the original lath and plaster, wood floors, milled trim and fireplace mantels survive. It is considered a good example of the uncommon pyramid cottage type, which made up only about 2 percent of surveyed Georgia historic houses. Wilsey stayed only briefly. Later owners farmed cotton, corn, tobacco and peanuts on the original 30 acres. Today the listing covers 1.4 acres, including the house and a historic well-house, with two later barns that do not contribute to its significance.","period_of_significance":"C. 1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular pyramid cottage (Architectural Classification listed as \"unknown\")","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; a 1950s porch enclosure was being removed at the time of the nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.556253-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/01000166.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000166/e3ea9ad1ef-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000166/e3ea9ad1ef-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Miles_Wilsey_house,_near_Fitzgerald,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Miles_Wilsey_house,_near_Fitzgerald,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206972","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134085963"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/ben-hill-county/wilsey-miles-v-house-01000166/"}
