It is a rare example of a nearly vanished ungraded schoolhouse type. It also reflects the importance of education in the rural Black community after the Civil War and the history of education in Virginia.","narrative":"Eckington School is a small, one-story frame schoolhouse in south-central Culpeper County, Virginia. Built in 1895, it served Black children from the nearby communities of Eckington and Poplar Ridge, and it is also known as Poplar Ridge School. The building measures 20 by 26 feet, is weatherboarded, rests on low stone piers and has a standing seam metal roof. Inside, the walls and ceiling are beaded pine boards and the floor is oak. Its windows are unusual because both the top and bottom sash can be opened. Classes ended in 1941, when Culpeper County consolidated its public schools. The building then served as a church hall for the neighboring Free Union Baptist Church, which received it in 1990, and a rear shed room was added around 1950. It is considered significant as the only surviving one-room public school for Black students in the county that remains in its original location and appearance, and as a reminder of rural Black education and segregated schooling in Virginia.","period_of_significance":"1895 to 1941","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"No style (vernacular)","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Listed function is vacant/not in use; the form says the building has been used for storage since 1987, and the owning church plans to stabilize and restore it for historical exhibits.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.816447-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/25/6803/41680325/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/01000154.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000154/ac7ac8f05a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000154/ac7ac8f05a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ser Amantio di Nicolao","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eckington_School_at_dusk.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ser Amantio di Nicolao</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eckington_School_at_dusk.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680325","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eckington_School_(Culpeper,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712265"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/culpeper-county/eckington-school-01000154/"}
