It is a highly intact example of his work, using top quality materials and design. It is eligible under Criterion B for its link to a prominent local figure.","narrative":"Set on a hill above Blythe Street just west of downtown Hendersonville, this L-plan brick house was completed in 1926 for architect Erle Stillwell, who drew the plans himself. Its Tudor Revival and Normanesque details include leaded-glass casement windows, parged brick walls, a multi-gable roof with flared gable ends, and two chimneys with chimney pots. Inside are cherry paneling, oak floors, cedar-lined closets, plaster over metal lath, and much original hardware. The grounds keep a stone retaining wall, slate footpaths and mature cedars, spruce and hemlocks. Stillwell lived here from 1926 to 1931, a productive period when he designed Hendersonville City Hall, Hendersonville High School and other prominent buildings. He was the town's leading architect and worked in many styles, from Neoclassical Revival to Art Deco. The house was listed for its association with him and as an intact example of his residential work. He lost the property during the Depression and later built a second home nearby.","period_of_significance":"1926-1931","architect_builder":"Stillwell, Erle","architectural_style":"Tudor Revival","criteria":["B"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the exterior is little changed apart from an enclosed sun porch and a replaced rear door, and the kitchen was renovated in the early 1990s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.72931-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/11/7208/47720811/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/01000125.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000125/eafb583937-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000125/eafb583937-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ERLE_STILLWELL_HOUSE_I_HENDERSON_COUNTY_NC.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720811","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erle_Stillwell_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24041061"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/henderson-county/stillwell-erle-house-01000125/"}
