Gates Apartment Block at 20-24 Castle Street in the Main South section of Worcester, Massachusetts, is a six-unit, brick Romanesque Revival apartment building built in 1887-1888. It is added to the existing Castle Street Row district as a boundary increase.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is the last structure in the late 19th century development of Castle Street by the Gates family (Criterion A). It is also a substantially intact, representative example of late 19th century Worcester apartment construction and one of the more stylish works of architect John B. Woodworth (Criterion C).","narrative":"Set on a hillside at 20-24 Castle Street in Worcester's Main South neighborhood, the Emma B. Gates Apartment Block is a six-unit brick apartment building in the Romanesque Revival style, built in 1887-1888. Its front facade has three brick pavilions with corbelled eaves and Classical cornices, separated by wooden porches that give each apartment an outdoor sitting area. The building stands on land once part of the Oread Collegiate Institute campus, sold off in pieces to pay the school's debts. Larkin N. Gates built row houses on Castle Street in the 1870s, and this block was the last building in the Gates family's development of the street. John B. Woodworth designed it. It was added to the Castle Street Row district because it is a largely intact example of Worcester's late 19th century apartment blocks and because its history, size and materials relate to the neighboring row houses.","period_of_significance":"1888-1950","architect_builder":"John B. Woodworth, architect; H.G. Hoflin, builder","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Romanesque Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The building is still used as an apartment building. The interiors of the apartments have been remodeled, but the main stair hall is well preserved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.685238-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/92/7931/63793192/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/01000120.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000120/c24643dd44-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000120/c24643dd44-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Castle_Row_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Castle_Row_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793192","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Street_Row","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5050306"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/castle-street-row-boundary-increase-01000120/"}
