It is also significant in commerce as the only surviving former boarding house of four known in Cornelia, which served rail travelers, workers, teachers and others for over 60 years.","narrative":"Located one block from the railroad depot in downtown Cornelia, this two-story frame house was built about 1907 for Robert Lee and Callie Loudermilk. It has a hipped metal roof with gabled projections, weatherboard siding, a brick foundation, a wrap-around porch and a central-hall plan. A 1916 rear addition added a bathroom and bedroom on two floors, and the family then began taking boarders. Callie cooked for guests while Robert raised livestock and farmed. Over the decades the house hosted railroad employees, traveling salesmen, teachers, artists, WPA workers and long-term residents. Her daughter Lurlie continued the business until the late 1970s. It is the only surviving former boarding house of the four known in Cornelia and is a rare, well-preserved example of the New South house type in Georgia. Threatened with demolition for a parking lot in the early 1990s, it was bought by a Loudermilk descendant, rehabilitated, and now serves as a museum and gallery.","period_of_significance":"c.1907-1950","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: New South House","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated after being saved from planned demolition in 1993; currently used as a museum and gallery.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.521239-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/01000079.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000079/2bc18cede2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000079/2bc18cede2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"MRX_Rotary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Loudermilk_Boarding_House_2013-09-28_13-55-27.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">MRX_Rotary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Loudermilk_Boarding_House_2013-09-28_13-55-27.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208546","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q96623844"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/habersham-county/loudermilk-boarding-house-01000079/"}
