It served as the office of Neutra's practice and shows his design philosophy of flexibility, custom detailing and landscape integration. It may be the only relatively intact surviving Neutra commercial building.","narrative":"Designed in 1949 by architect Richard Neutra and finished in 1950, this one- and two-story wood-framed building in Los Angeles's Silverlake area combines offices with two apartments. It has a simple rectangular plan, stucco walls, a nearly flat roof and custom aluminum doors and windows. Movable louvers shade the south side, and a steel beam extends to the property line as an ornamental trellis. It was built for the Neutra and Alexander partnership and later housed the Neutra practice under Dion Neutra. Interior features such as the custom lighting system, acoustic ceiling tile, ducts and apartment kitchens survive. It was listed for architecture because it is a fine example of 1950s Modern commercial design and is thought to be the only relatively intact Neutra commercial building to survive. The City of Los Angeles designated it a Historic-Cultural Monument in 2000. Its original planters, signage and landscape hedge also remain.","period_of_significance":"1950","architect_builder":"Neutra, Richard Joseph; Marsh, Fordyce","architectural_style":"Modern Movement/International Style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition with virtually all original design features intact; it contains both office and apartment space.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.756912-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/01000075.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000075/fc99d9ea00-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000075/fc99d9ea00-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bruce Boehner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NeutraOfficeBldg.1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bruce Boehner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NeutraOfficeBldg.1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859345","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutra_Office_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q383737"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/neutra-office-building-01000075/"}
