Talmadge Drive in the Kensington area of San Diego, built in 1933 and designed and built by Cliff May around a central courtyard.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant at the state level under Criterion C for architecture. It is an excellent example of Cliff May's early romantic ranch houses, or \"haciendas,\" and was his second architectural design. It illustrates formative ideas of the California ranch house that later spread widely.","narrative":"This single-story house at 4669 E. Talmadge Drive in San Diego's Kensington neighborhood was built in 1933 to designs by Cliff May. Laid out in a U around a central courtyard, it has a multi-level red clay tile roof, rough stucco walls made to resemble hand-built adobe, exposed redwood beamtails, and a recessed plank front door. Inside are tiled floors, open redwood beams, rounded plaster corners and five corner beehive fireplaces. The lot backs onto a canyon with eleven rock-walled terraces. May never became a licensed architect, yet he designed more than a thousand ranch houses and influenced American suburban housing. This house was his second design and shows early ideas of the California ranch house: a blank facade to the street, natural materials, a patio and a corridor. Later changes include a 1995 verandah, an enclosed corridor and two furnaces. These retain the ranch character, and the house was listed for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1933","architect_builder":"May, Clifford Magee","architectural_style":"Other: California Ranch House","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Single dwelling in current use; described as carefully maintained in its original condition with some additions, including a 1995 verandah.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.246197-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/01000027.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000027/2b22349e72-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/01000027/2b22349e72-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"TujSB","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lindstrom_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">TujSB</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lindstrom_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860913","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5754298"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-diego-county/lindstrom-house-01000027/"}
