It was built in 1833 and remodeled in 1878.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is architecturally significant as a substantially intact, representative example of nineteenth-century religious architecture in Logan and Schuyler County. Its Federal-era form and heavy timber frame are overlaid with an 1878 Victorian remodeling. It is the only surviving public building in the hamlet and a reminder of the once-thriving mill village of Polkville.","narrative":"Logan Methodist Church is a former church at the crossroads of County Routes 2 and 4 in the hamlet of Logan, Town of Hector, Schuyler County. Built in 1833 as a simple Federal-style frame building on a stone foundation, it was remodeled in 1878 with a front tower, bracketed eaves, Gothic-arched windows and scroll-sawn ornament. Inside, beaded wainscoting, oak trim, paneled doors and a recessed arch in the altar area survive, though the galleries were lost. The congregation began about 1816 in what was then the mill village of Polkville. It merged with the Ovid Methodists in 1968, and the building was abandoned by 1970. A local community association bought it in 1986 and has worked to stabilize it for community use. It was listed for its architecture, as a representative nineteenth-century church and the only surviving public building in the hamlet.","period_of_significance":"1833-1878","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early 19th Century: Federal; Late 19th Century: Vernacular Victorian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Vacant since being abandoned in 1970, with some deterioration; being restored for use as a community center by a local community association that bought it in 1986.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.285615-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00001690.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001690/fad6ee2951-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001690/fad6ee2951-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Logan_Methodist_Church,_Logan_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Logan_Methodist_Church,_Logan_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321801","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logan_Methodist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6667102"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schuyler-county/logan-methodist-church-00001690/"}
