It was built around 1870 over the south branch of Maltanner Creek.","why_significant":"The bridge is significant under criteria A and C as a rare and substantially intact example of rural vernacular stone bridge design and construction. It is one of only four surviving examples of its type in the town of Fairfield. It reflects local transportation history and the work of local craftsmen using native limestone, and it survived the severe flood of August 1898.","narrative":"About a mile east of Middleville, in the town of Fairfield, a single-span limestone arch bridge crosses the south branch of Maltanner Creek. Built around 1870, it carried a wagon road between Middleville and Fairfield. The 35-foot-long structure has a segmental arch of mortared, partly dressed limestone voussoirs, with dry-laid fieldstone spandrels and abutments. Low fieldstone parapets once lined the roadway, and parts of them still stand in a collapsed state. Local tradition credits members of the Todd family of stone masons, though town records name no builder. The bridge was taken out of service in 1913, and the highway built in the 1920s followed a new alignment, which helped the old span survive. It is regarded as a rare, largely intact example of local vernacular engineering, one of only four of its type left in Fairfield, and one of the few stone bridges to withstand the August 1898 flood in the West Canada Creek valley.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1870-1913","architect_builder":"Charles & Eugene Todd (builders-attributed)","architectural_style":"No Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant and not in use; bypassed and removed from service in 1913, with portions of the fieldstone parapets partially collapsed.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.479453-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00001685.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001685/0935d7e8ed-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001685/0935d7e8ed-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Allan Green","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Route_29_Stone_Arch_Bridge.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Allan Green</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Route_29_Stone_Arch_Bridge.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318186","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_29_Stone_Arch_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7371415"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/herkimer-county/route-29-stone-arch-bridge-00001685/"}
