It served as a rural school from 1894 until 1937 and as a social and civic center for the canyon community, hosting plays, voting, Sunday school, dances and meetings. It also illustrates a typical late 19th century one-room rural school.","narrative":"San Timoteo Canyon Schoolhouse is a one-room wood frame school on San Timoteo Canyon Road between Redlands and Moreno Valley. Built in 1894 by Vander Venter, probably with help from local farmers, it replaced an adobe school that opened in 1856. The building has horizontal wood siding, separate entries and anteroom for boys and girls, a single large classroom with blackboards on three walls, and an open bell tower with a pyramidal roof. A stone drinking fountain built in 1925 stands in front and is counted as a contributing object. Pepper trees planted around 1918 flank the building. Eight grades were taught in one room, and enrollment grew when Southern Pacific railroad crews and their families stayed nearby between 1900 and 1928. The school closed in 1937, though Sunday school continued. Beyond teaching, it served as the community's gathering place for plays, voting, dances, picnics and club meetings. Today it stands vacant and boarded up but remains largely intact.","period_of_significance":"1894-1937","architect_builder":"Architect unknown (design probably from the State Board of Education); builder Vander Venter, likely assisted by local farmers","architectural_style":"No Style (described as vernacular one-room schoolhouse)","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"The school building stands vacant and boarded up but retains very good integrity apart from the loss of secondary buildings; the roof was recently replaced and a restoration is planned.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:28.194398-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/00001646.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001646/f92153c92a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001646/f92153c92a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bruceherwig","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:San_Timoteo_Canyon_Schoolhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bruceherwig</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:San_Timoteo_Canyon_Schoolhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860515","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Timoteo_Canyon_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133433195"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/riverside-county/san-timoteo-canyon-schoolhouse-00001646/"}
