The architect was Adolphus Gustavus Bauer.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the cemetery reflects the Ecclesiological movement's influence on antebellum Episcopal missions in North Carolina, with a Greek cross plan, notable monuments, and an 1844 cast-iron family fence. It argues the church is significant as the work of Bauer and as an example of the late-nineteenth-century shift to stone construction by Episcopal congregations in the state.","narrative":"Built of granite between 1896 and 1898 on a corner lot in the small courthouse town of Jackson, the Church of the Saviour is a gable-front Gothic Revival church with a three-stage entrance tower and a separate sacristy on the south side. The church replaced an earlier frame building destroyed by fire in 1895. Adolphus Gustavus Bauer, a Raleigh architect, produced the design, which was modified by the building committee, and the first service was held in November 1898, months after Bauer's death. The adjoining cemetery was designed in 1853 by Frederick FitzGerald, the rector, in the form of a Greek cross with twelve family lots. It contains marble and granite monuments from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including work by several marble yards, and an ornate 1844 cast-iron fence made in Philadelphia surrounds the Newsum family lot. The property is regarded as an example of the Ecclesiological influence on Episcopal building and burial design in antebellum North Carolina.","period_of_significance":"1853-1950","architect_builder":"Adolphus Gustavus Bauer (architect)","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C","D"],"status_note":"Today the property is in excellent condition and has had very little alteration since its construction.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.147473-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/7215/47721599/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/00001614.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001614/9b40f287da-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001614/9b40f287da-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Frank Womble","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Church_of_the_Saviour.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank Womble</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Church_of_the_Saviour.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"04000606","name":"Jackson Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/jackson-historic-district-04000606/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721599","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_Saviour_and_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5118053"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/northampton-county/church-of-the-saviour-and-cemetery-00001614/"}
