It is also a representative example of vernacular Federal architecture built of locally quarried Becraft limestone. Its association with the Columbia Turnpike, which operated as a toll road until about 1907, supports its transportation significance.","narrative":"Built around 1800 of locally quarried Becraft limestone, this two-and-one-half-story house on Route 23B in Greenport served as the tollkeeper's residence at the west gate of the Columbia Turnpike. The turnpike, chartered in 1799, ran about twenty miles between Hudson and Hillsdale, and toll records from 1803 to 1820 show the west gate was the most heavily used of its three. The house has three bays, a gable roof, walls about two feet thick and splayed brick lintels over its openings. The wooden gate and attached frame office were removed in the early twentieth century. The turnpike company operated the road until about 1907, when the county bought its rights. The house later became a rental home, then storage, and was acquired by the City of Hudson in 1969. It is valued as a rare surviving turnpike-era building in the county and as a representative example of vernacular Federal architecture in local stone. It is now vacant.","period_of_significance":"c. 1800 - 1907","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant for many years and in deteriorated condition inside; the tollgate portion is gone, but the building retains a high degree of integrity to its construction date.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.459148-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00001571.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001571/091cf63a0b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001571/091cf63a0b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"HunnySWeaver","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Columbia_Turnpike-West_Tollhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">HunnySWeaver</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Columbia_Turnpike-West_Tollhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316970","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_Turnpike-West_Tollhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5149884"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/columbia-county/columbia-turnpike-west-tollhouse-00001571/"}
