William Dodge, with several later additions.","why_significant":"The nomination finds it significant in education, architecture and social history. It combines Shingle style and Adirondack Camp style elements in a well-preserved example of Late Victorian vernacular design. Built with local craftsmen, native materials and volunteer labor, it was the only library of its kind in the area for about forty years and has kept its original use.","narrative":"Keene Valley Library is a small shingled building on Main Street in the Adirondack High Peaks region of Essex County, New York. Rev. William Dodge of the local Congregational Church designed it, and local builders Arthur Trumbull and George Luck completed it in 1896 for $1,300. Its square main block has a large clerestory lantern over the center, a wide bay window facing the street, and diamond-pane windows. The design blends the nationally popular Shingle style with the regional Adirondack Camp style. Additions followed in 1923, 1931, 1962 and 1985, mostly out of view behind the front facade. The library grew from a book gift made in 1885 by Sarah Dunham and from a library association formed in 1892. For about forty years it was the only resource of its kind nearby, and it has remained a community library. Its good integrity and its role in local education and social life underpin its listing, although the roof structure needs repair.","period_of_significance":"1896 - 1950","architect_builder":"Rev. The nomination describes structural problems in the roof and lantern and a planned renovation to replace rafters and reinforce the lantern ring collars.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.516951-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00001528.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001528/62bfc7f871-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001528/62bfc7f871-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Keene_Valley_Library,_Keene_Valley,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Keene_Valley_Library,_Keene_Valley,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317785","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keene_Valley_Library","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6382905"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/essex-county/keene-valley-library-00001528/"}
