It retains its original setting and its eclectic late-Victorian design. It is described as the only active station of its kind in northeastern New York.","narrative":"Brick below and clapboard above, topped by a slate hipped roof with dormers and a centered cupola, this railroad station at East and Wing Streets in Fort Edward was built by the Delaware & Hudson Railroad in 1900. It replaced an 1880 station on the same site, at the junction of the north-south line and the Lake George branch. A one-story board-and-batten freight house from 1880 and the original spur tracks to the west also survive. The station was valued as a well-preserved example of a turn-of-the-century passenger and freight depot, with flared eaves, large roof brackets and ornate interior wood moldings. It reflects the part the railroad played in the growth of this Hudson River village. The D&H left the building in the 1980s, and a local development corporation acquired it to prevent demolition and began restoration. Amtrak trains still stop there, although passengers wait outdoors until rehabilitation is finished.","period_of_significance":"1880 - 1949","architect_builder":"DELAWARE & HUDSON (D&H) RAILROAD","architectural_style":"Late Victorian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The building is no longer open for passenger use and is in disrepair, but restoration work is in progress. It remains an active Amtrak stop.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.451598-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00001527.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001527/7ffc164d3d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001527/7ffc164d3d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Russ Nelson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fort_Edward-Glens_Falls_(Amtrak_station)_in_2008.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Russ Nelson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fort_Edward-Glens_Falls_(Amtrak_station)_in_2008.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322831","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Edward_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3096460"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/washington-county/fort-edward-d-and-h-train-station-00001527/"}
