Peter Guerrant built the house about 1835.","why_significant":"The house is locally significant under Criterion C in architecture as a rare survivor of a once-common Piedmont Virginia house type: a hall-parlor frame farmhouse joined by a hyphen to a separate kitchen. Few such farmhouses survive intact, especially in Buckingham County. The house retains a high degree of integrity and its simple original features.","narrative":"Set on a broad ridge along the south bank of the James River in Buckingham County, this farmhouse was built about 1835 by Peter Guerrant on land he inherited from his father in 1819. It is a one-and-a-half-story, two-room frame dwelling with beaded siding, a dentil cornice, shouldered brick chimneys and a slate roof, with a kitchen set at the rear and joined by a later hyphen. A smokehouse and a small family cemetery also survive from a farm that once had many barns, a mill and other buildings. The Guerrant and Snoddy families lived here for more than 130 years, raising tobacco, corn, cattle and wheat. The property was recognized for its architecture. Farmhouses of this plan, a hall-parlor house with a connected kitchen, were once common across the Virginia Piedmont but have mostly been lost, altered or absorbed into larger houses. This example remains largely unaltered, though empty for decades.","period_of_significance":"1835-ca.1950","architect_builder":"Peter Guerrant","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant/not in use; described as weather-beaten and left empty for almost half a century, though retaining a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.432244-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/6798/41679888/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/00001497.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001497/ed19423f1d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001497/ed19423f1d-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Guerrant_House_driveway.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Guerrant_House_driveway.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679888","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerrant_House_(Arvonia,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5614966"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/buckingham-county/guerrant-house-00001497/"}
