Its entries at the front corners rather than in a central vestibule set it apart from other post-World War II stainless steel diners in the state. It is also the last diner in Chicopee and shows the 1960s shift toward a family-restaurant image.","narrative":"Al's Diner, at 14 Yelle Street in Chicopee's Willimansett neighborhood, is a forty-foot stainless steel diner brought to the city in 1958. Master Diners of Pequannock, New Jersey, made it, and it was first called The White Diner. Red and blue porcelain enamel bands trim the steel cladding, and entries sit in the first and eighth bays instead of a central vestibule, a feature that marked Master's diners. Inside are six booths, fourteen counter stools, a sunburst-patterned back bar and a rear kitchen wing. Roof signs advertising ham and French meat pie survive. The diner is one of only two Master-built diners in Massachusetts and the better preserved. It is also the last diner in Chicopee. Its renaming as Al's Restaurant in 1962 reflects the industry's move toward family dining and competition with fast food chains. It was recognized for its architecture and its place in local commerce.","period_of_significance":"1958","architect_builder":"Master Diners","architectural_style":"Other: Stainless Steel Diner","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still operating as a restaurant; the diner remains in the same family that has run it since the 1970s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.584215-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/80/7902/63790280/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/00001482.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001482/13c5259329-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001482/13c5259329-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Al%27s_Diner,_Chicopee_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Al%27s_Diner,_Chicopee_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790280","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al%27s_Diner","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4702126"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/hampden-county/als-diner-00001482/"}
