It was built in 1852 for David and Polly Strickler.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a well-preserved Federal-Greek Revival farmhouse that shows the persistence of the Federal style in mountainous Page County. It retains traces of vernacular decorative finishes and a basement-level food storage and preparation area with brick-paved floors that illustrates nineteenth-century domestic arrangements. Craftsman stonework added in the 1910s is also noted.","narrative":"Built in 1852 for David and Polly Strickler and their large family, this two-story brick farmhouse sits on a high terrace above the South Fork of the Shenandoah River in southern Page County. It has a symmetrical five-bay front, a full basement and an integral two-story ell. Inside, the center-passage plan includes Federal mantels with Greek Revival influence, traces of painted graining and stenciling, and a basement with brick-paved floors, a kitchen fireplace, a pantry and storage rooms for food. The Louderback family acquired the farm in 1914 and added Craftsman-style river-cobble stonework to the porches and yard. The nominated parcel also holds an L-shaped outbuilding, a grape arbor, chicken houses, a privy and a fenced cemetery with Victorian marble tombstones. The property was listed for its architecture, as a well-preserved local example of Federal-Greek Revival design, with a period of significance from 1852 to 1950.","period_of_significance":"1852-1950","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal; Greek Revival; Craftsman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated in 1989-93; still used as a single dwelling with secondary agricultural structures and a cemetery.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.2393-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/0/6824/41682400/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/00001441.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682400","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strickler%E2%80%93Louderback_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16900783"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/page-county/strickley-louderback-house-00001441/"}
