It combines four gridded plats, the oldest laid out by Lycurgus Berkley in 1866. This is additional documentation for an existing listing.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the district is significant for its variety of turn-of-the-twentieth-century commercial and residential architecture, some by leading regional firms. It also shows how once-rural land was subdivided into urban plats. Hardyfields keeps the greatest integrity and architectural diversity. The district is an intact whole that illustrates Berkley's history and urban development.","narrative":"Berkley North is a neighborhood of about 86 acres in Norfolk, Virginia, near the junction of the Eastern and Southern Branches of the Elizabeth River. It grew from four adjoining plats: the original town laid out by Lycurgus Berkley in 1866, the Tunis and Nash tracts developed before 1889, and Hardyfields, subdivided from the Hardy Estate after 1889. Narrow streets hold mostly frame houses on small rectangular lots, ranging from Italianate and Queen Anne to Colonial Revival and Craftsman bungalows. Churches and commercial buildings cluster along South Main Street and Berkley Avenue. Notable buildings include the Victorian-Gothic Berkley Avenue Baptist Church, designed by L. B. Volk, and the Neoclassical Merchants' and Planters' Bank, designed by Lee and Diehl and built in 1909. A walled memorial park marks the Hardy family estate site. The district was recognized for its architecture and its record of community planning and development between 1873 and 1945.","period_of_significance":"1873-1945","architect_builder":"Volk, L.
