It was built in the late 18th century, around 1789, for John Beadles.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C for architecture as a probable eighteenth-century dwelling that keeps many notable early features. These include a hall-parlor plan, Flemish- and English-bond chimneys, a paneled Georgian mantel, a winder stair and hand-wrought hardware. It is representative of better-appointed backcountry Virginia homes of about 1800. Significance is at the local level.","narrative":"Near Stanardsville in Greene County, Virginia, this two-story log house was built around 1789 by John Beadles, a Revolutionary War militia captain who bought 437 acres at the foot of the Blue Ridge in 1788. Tradition holds that he built it for himself and his new bride. The three-bay house has a stone foundation, a metal gable roof, and brick gable-end chimneys laid in Flemish and English bond. Inside, the hall-parlor plan survives with beaded ceiling joists, board partitions, batten doors on HL hinges, a winder stair, and a paneled Georgian mantel. A Craftsman-style porch from about 1941 and a ca. 1920 stone-chimneyed washhouse were added later. A rehabilitation added a modern rear frame wing and a log house moved from West Virginia. The property was listed for its architecture, as a well-finished example of a backcountry Virginia dwelling of about 1800, with a period of significance from about 1789 to 1950.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1789-1950","architect_builder":"John Beadles (original builder, per tradition); Powell, Ernest (washhouse stone mason)","architectural_style":"Georgian; Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"A rehabilitation was underway at the time of nomination, with some mantels and a door in storage; additions include a modern rear frame wing and a moved log house.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.727728-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/15/6810/41681015/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/00001433.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001433/8e84a0e2f2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001433/8e84a0e2f2-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Beales_House_through_the_trees.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Beales_House_through_the_trees.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681015","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beadles_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712005"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/greene-county/beadles-house-00001433/"}
