It contains 67 resources, of which 50 contribute.","why_significant":"The district is argued to show the economic, social and cultural effect that the railroad had on small North Carolina towns in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It qualifies locally under Criterion A for community development and planning, transportation and commerce, and under Criterion C for architecture. It retains a high degree of integrity and has good examples of building types and styles typical of small Southern towns.","narrative":"Liberty's historic district follows the railroad that reshaped the town in the 1880s. Roughly 1.3 miles long, it is anchored by the rail corridor of the former Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway, later Norfolk Southern, with its raised rail bed, planted right-of-way, relocated depot and retired caboose. Along West Swannanoa Avenue stand two-story brick commercial buildings from the early twentieth century, including the Curtis Theater of 1949. Nearby residential streets hold frame houses in late nineteenth-century vernacular forms, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival and Bungalow/Craftsman styles. Of 67 resources, 50 contribute to the district's character. Before the railroad arrived in 1884, Liberty was mainly agricultural. The line and its station brought growth, a town charter in 1889, easier access to markets and a wider range of goods for local merchants. The district is recognized locally for its role in community development, transportation, commerce and architecture between about 1880 and 1949.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1880-1950","architect_builder":"Causey, H.C.","architectural_style":"Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Bungalow/Craftsman, I-house, hall and parlor","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Several resources are in current use, including the depot, a caboose used as the Chamber of Commerce office, a theater and commercial buildings.
