It is believed to date from about 1790.","why_significant":"It is significant under Criterion C as a rare and substantially intact example of New World Dutch barn design and construction. It reflects post-Revolutionary timber framing, including taller side walls and less steep roofs than earlier barns. It is the southwesternmost intact Dutch barn known in Montgomery County.","narrative":"Standing on a grassy knoll in the rural hamlet of Salt Springville, this Dutch barn is a heavy timber-framed agricultural building thought to date from about 1790. It measures 48 by 40 feet and has horizontal board siding, a wood shingle roof and large plank wagon doors at each gable end. Its frame of H-shaped bents, anchor beams and mortise-and-tenon joints follows the form brought to New York by Dutch and Palatine German settlers. The barn was built during resettlement after the Revolutionary War, when taller side walls and slightly flatter roofs appeared. By the mid-nineteenth century it had served as a cheese factory and hay barn, and it later deteriorated. A restoration begun in 1973 and finished in 1976 removed later additions and replaced inappropriate materials. It is listed for its architecture, as a rare and well-preserved example in a county where many Dutch barns are endangered or altered, and it now hosts public events.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1790","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial/Dutch Colonial","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated in 1976 and in seasonal community use as an architectural museum of timber craftsmanship, hosting exhibitions, concerts and festivals.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.177932-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00001411.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"95001024","name":"Lindesay Patent Rural Historic District (Boundary Increase)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/lindesay-patent-rural-historic-district-boundary-increase-95001024/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319065","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windfall_Dutch_Barn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q43082497"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/montgomery-county/windfall-dutch-barn-00001411/"}
