Its alterations reflect the growing affluence and assimilation of the congregation. The Spanish Baroque-inspired facade and orthodox plan link it to other village synagogues in the county.","narrative":"Set on North Street in the Catskill village of South Fallsburg, this synagogue was built in 1902 on the plot the congregation bought for it. Originally called Ahavas Achim, the group became the South Fallsburg Hebrew Association in 1910. The building is a concrete structure clad in stucco, with a hipped roof and a three-bay facade topped by a curving, Spanish Baroque-inspired parapet with a round Star of David window. In the 1910s it was raised one story to make room for a Talmud Torah school beneath the sanctuary, a women's gallery was added in 1919, and a new facade was built before 1920. Inside, the sanctuary follows a traditional orthodox plan and keeps its pressed-metal ceiling. The synagogue was listed because it shows how a small-town Jewish congregation of farmers, guest-house keepers and merchants reshaped its building as its fortunes grew, and because it remains among the oldest synagogues in Sullivan County.","period_of_significance":"1902-c1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late nineteenth and twentieth century revivals","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; original windows were replaced in the 1970s, but the original frames and moldings survive.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.29721-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00001410.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001410/a4c7ebc5e6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001410/a4c7ebc5e6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:South_Fallsburg_Community_Hebrew_Association.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:South_Fallsburg_Community_Hebrew_Association.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322413","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Fallsburg_Hebrew_Association_Synagogue","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7567208"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/south-fallsburg-hebrew-association-synagogue-00001410/"}
