The nomination calls it the finest commercial building in Marathon, with an urban form and elaborate facade unusual in a small, rural village. The architect is unidentified, though the design suggests an experienced hand from a nearby city.","narrative":"Built in 1885 at the corner of Cortland and Main Streets in Marathon, this three-story brick block was commissioned by Gage Tarbell, a lawyer turned insurance executive, who placed his father-in-law's dry goods store on the ground floor. The Cortland Street facade has two cast-iron storefronts below identical three-bay upper sections. Brick pilasters, stone string courses, a terra cotta cornice, colored glass window surrounds, mosaic tympanums and encaustic tile create a richly textured Queen Anne design, topped by a bracketed cornice and a pediment carrying the 1885 inscription. Painted advertising for Swift & Co. survives on the south wall. The building is regarded as the finest commercial architecture in the village, and its urban form was unusual in a small community dominated by frame, detached buildings. Its architect is unidentified. Over time it housed a restaurant, a corset manufacturer, and a transport company, and it now holds retail space and apartments.","period_of_significance":"1885","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Retail space and an auto parts store on the first floor; the third floor has been rehabilitated for three apartments and the second floor is largely unfinished, with upper floors being rehabilitated as apartments.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.15971-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00001408.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001408/b39b7be4cf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001408/b39b7be4cf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TARBELL_BUILDING,_MARATHON,_COURTLAND_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317163","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarbell_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7685647"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cortland-county/tarbell-building-00001408/"}
