Wilber, one of Oneonta's most prominent bankers and civic benefactors, and as an exceptionally large example of late nineteenth-century residential architecture. The c1890 remodeling preserved nearly all of the 1875 house while adding Queen Anne features such as a tower, new roof and wraparound porch. No architect has been identified for either phase.","narrative":"Standing on a prominent lot on Ford Avenue in downtown Oneonta, this three-story wood-frame house was built in 1875 by banker George I. Wilber as an Italianate residence with a flat roof, bracketed eaves and a cruciform plan. Around 1890 Wilber, by then one of the city's leading citizens, had it enlarged and remodeled in the Queen Anne style. The changes added a complex gabled roof, a three-story engaged corner tower with a conical roof, varied shingle siding and a wraparound porch with a porte-cochere. Almost all of the original house survives inside the later design. The interior keeps its center-hall plan, including an entrance hall with a mosaic floor and coffered paneling. A early twentieth-century carriage house and portions of the original landscaping and decorative cast-iron fence also remain. Wilber served as president of the family bank, directed railroad companies and the local water works, and supported the state normal school. No architect has been identified for either phase of construction.","period_of_significance":"1875-1950","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian (Italianate, remodeled c1890 in Queen Anne style)","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Described as in the process of restoration, with some rooms subdivided into offices; the cast-iron fence and landscape are being restored.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.32368-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00001381.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001381/f0c5249cd0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001381/f0c5249cd0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"ErixS","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wilbur_House_in_Oneonta_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">ErixS</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wilbur_House_in_Oneonta_NY.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"03001245","name":"Oneonta Downtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/oneonta-downtown-historic-district-03001245/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321010","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_I._Wilber_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5540921"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/otsego-county/wilber-george-i-house-00001381/"}
