Peck on the grounds of Helen Hayes Hospital, west of US 9W in Haverstraw, Rockland County, New York.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a largely intact local example of Second Empire residential estate architecture. It is one of the few surviving suburban villas that reflected the prosperity of businessmen who profited from Rockland County's industrial boom. It retains a high degree of integrity despite decades of closure.","narrative":"Set on a high rise of land above US 9W with a panoramic view of the Hudson River, this two-story wood-frame house in Haverstraw was built around 1865 for Henry M. Peck, a village trustee who helped open a school in 1852. Its S-curved mansard roof of patterned slate, bracketed cornice, segmental arched windows and pedimented dormers mark it as Second Empire. A central tower bay, a Colonial Revival porch and porte cochere, and a rear service wing add variety. Inside, a center-hall plan retains plaster walls, parquet floors with inlay, lincrusta wainscoting and a Corinthian-columned archway. The estate later passed to Lucretia Snedeker Fowler and was bought in 1931 as the hospital superintendent's residence. It was closed in the 1970s. The house was listed as one of the few surviving suburban villas from Rockland County's industrial boom, and the hospital now plans its restoration.","period_of_significance":"ca.1865-1910","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Second Empire","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Vacated and closed up in the 1970s and unused since; the hospital is undertaking a full restoration.
