The main block was built in 1905 and two wings were added in 1925.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant under Criteria A and C for its association with the development of Malden's school system, including its role in the city's 1920s junior high school program. It is also a well-preserved Colonial Revival school, and the first of Malden's brick schools to depart from the Romanesque Revival style. Its significance is local.","narrative":"Built in 1905 and opened in September 1906, this brick school on Broadway in Malden's Maplewood section was first called the Broadway School and was renamed in 1913 for longtime principal Marcia P. Browne. Boston architect Edward I. Wilson designed the Colonial Revival main block, which has a symmetrical facade, a stone-columned central entry, and a slate hipped roof. It was planned in response to severe overcrowding as Malden's population grew. In 1925 a classroom wing and an auditorium and gymnasium wing were added. They were part of the city's pioneering junior high school program and brought showers, a science lab and a gymnasium to a Malden school for the first time. The building served as a junior high until the early 1990s. A certified rehabilitation in 1998-1999 converted it to 98 units of assisted living for elderly residents. It is recognized for its role in local education and as a well-preserved early twentieth-century school design.","period_of_significance":"1905-1950","architect_builder":"Edward I.
