It has a cruciform plan, Picturesque ornament and a re-sited late-eighteenth-century kitchen house, plus two outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination finds the house locally significant under Criterion C for architecture. Its symmetrical cruciform plan is unique in Cameron, and its sawn, turned and molded ornament reflects the tastes of wealthy late-nineteenth-century merchant-farmers. The exterior remains remarkably intact, and the house documents the building techniques and materials of the period.","narrative":"Built in 1893 just outside Cameron in Moore County, North Carolina, this two-story frame farmhouse was the home of John Evander Phillips, a merchant-farmer who ran stores in town and grew dewberries on his farm. Its cruciform plan, with four wings projecting from a central block, is unique in Cameron. Turned porch posts, sawnwork brackets, bargeboards and diamond-patterned shingles decorate the exterior, much like houses built by town businessmen of the same period. A late-eighteenth-century kitchen house, moved and altered in 1893, connects to the main block by an enclosed breezeway. The Phillips family lived there into 1970, when the interior was divided into three apartments. A 1997 fire damaged the kitchen house, breezeway and part of the main block, but much original material survives. The house was listed for its architecture, as a record of the tastes and building methods of a prosperous late-Victorian farmer-merchant.","period_of_significance":"1893","architect_builder":"Unknown (built for John Evander Phillips)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian (Picturesque Movement influences)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Interior divided into three apartments about 1970; a 1997 fire damaged the kitchen house, breezeway and part of the main block. Rehabilitation was planned, with future use as an antiques shop.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:52.79548-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/34/7214/47721434/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/00001184.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001184/a60334aebf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001184/a60334aebf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Cohee","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JEPhillipshouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cohee</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JEPhillipshouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721434","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Evander_Phillips_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19987540"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/moore-county/phillips-john-evander-house-00001184/"}
