It sits on 1.4 acres with a barn, corn crib, outhouse and other farm resources.","why_significant":"The property is a well-preserved early tavern that kept much of its 1802 structure, including hand-hewn post-and-beam framing and original window architraves. It also shows a late 1870s Victorian renovation by Harvey Brown, Caleb's son. The surviving outbuildings and foundations help document the original farmstead.","narrative":"Brown's Tavern is a frame inn and residence on Route 40 at the southern end of South Hartford, in Washington County, New York. Caleb Brown built it in 1802, and the 1.4-acre parcel is all that remains of his original 158-acre farmstead. The building is rectangular, two and a half stories, with five bays across the front, a high-pitched gable roof and a stone basement. Its hand-hewn post-and-beam frame still shows bark and adze marks. Harvey Brown, Caleb's son, renovated it in the late 1870s. That work added a slate roof, two-over-two sash windows, Italianate-style porches and new chimneys, while the original window architraves and the four 18-by-18-foot room layouts survived. A third-floor ballroom, also used as a Masonic meeting room, retains early features. The property includes a barn dating to 1878, a corn crib, an outhouse and foundations of an earlier store and sheds. Today it operates as a bed and breakfast.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Caleb Brown (builder)","architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Currently used as a bed and breakfast (residence and hotel).","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.570474-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00001154.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322818","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown%27s_Tavern","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4975961"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/washington-county/browns-tavern-00001154/"}
