It is now used as a grange hall.","why_significant":"The station is a good representative example of railroad architecture in Columbia County, with a deeply overhanging hipped roof on decorative brackets. It also reflects the railroad's importance to the development of rural Columbia County. It is one of three surviving passenger depots on the 16-mile Hudson-Chatham spur.","narrative":"Mellenville Railroad Station is a one-story brick building at the center of a small triangular square in the hamlet of Mellenville, Town of Claverack, Columbia County, New York. Built about 1900 by the Boston & Albany Railroad, it has a slate hipped roof that overhangs deeply on all four sides, supported by heavy wood brackets. Inside, a large former waiting room retains dark-stained wainscoting, woodwork and three original benches. A brick-and-board privy stands to the east. The station served a 16-mile spur between Hudson and Chatham that began as the Hudson & Berkshire Railroad in 1838, and the railroad helped the hamlet grow. Passenger service ended in the early 1930s, and the Mellenville Grange bought the building in 1933 and still uses it. It is one of three surviving depots on the spur and is listed for its architecture and its link to the railroad's role in the county's rural development.","period_of_significance":"c. 1900","architect_builder":"Boston & Albany Railroad (builder); architect unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a grange hall since its 1933 sale to the Mellenville Grange; the railroad track is gone, and the station is largely intact inside and out.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.181975-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00001120.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001120/8efe6d0ecc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00001120/8efe6d0ecc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"HunnySWeaver","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mellenville_Railroad_Station_(Now_Mellenville_Grange).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">HunnySWeaver</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mellenville_Railroad_Station_(Now_Mellenville_Grange).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317039","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellenville_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6813074"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/columbia-county/mellenville-railroad-station-00001120/"}
