The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway built it in 1876, and it was moved a short distance on the same property in 1909.","why_significant":"It is significant under Criterion C as an intact example of 19th-century railroad architecture. It shows the typical features of a small-town Lake Shore and Michigan Southern depot, including board-and-batten siding, bracketed eaves, a station agent's bay and a combined passenger and baggage plan. Few comparable depots survive with this level of integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1876 by the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, this wood depot on Garfield Road in Olmsted Falls measures 108 by 30 feet. It has board-and-batten siding, a low rubble sandstone foundation, wide eaves on carved brackets, hood moldings over openings, and round rosette-pattern windows in the gables. Inside, it follows a combined passenger and freight layout with a central waiting room, a second waiting room and a former baggage room. The railroad moved it a short distance in 1909 when more tracks were added, but it stayed on the same property. For decades the depot was a center of trade and social life, handling goods for farmers and merchants and serving a commuter train to Cleveland. Passenger service ended in 1960, and the building later served as a craft shop and then a model railroad clubhouse. It is valued as a rare, well-preserved example of its type, while similar depots nearby were demolished, altered or moved far from their sites.","period_of_significance":"1876-1909","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"In good condition and in use as a clubhouse for a model railroad club. Passenger service ended in 1960, the building briefly stood empty, and from 1962 it served as a craft shop.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.01234-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/00000963.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000963/3e1f575a6e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000963/3e1f575a6e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Olmsted_Falls_Depot.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Olmsted_Falls_Depot.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987389","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137727234"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/olmsted-falls-depot-00000963/"}
