It was built in 1896 by William H. Hankins & Co.","why_significant":"The bridge is argued to be a rare, intact example of traditional stone arch bridge construction in the Upper Delaware Valley, one of only two surviving in the 74-mile river corridor. It is also significant as part of Tusten's infrastructure, linking the northern and southern halves of the former milling community. It remains in its original use and retains a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1896, this two-arch stone bridge carries Tusten Road over the Ten Mile River close to where it meets the Delaware. It measures 51.5 feet long and about 15 feet wide, with arches of mortared voussoirs springing from bedrock, a center pier shaped as an icebreaker, fieldstone walls, and bluestone coping. A coping stone recovered from the river names the builder, W.H. Hankins & Co., and the date. Hankins, a raftsman and stone mason, ran quarries employing up to 30 men. The bridge stood at the heart of the mill hamlet of Tusten and linked its northern and southern halves. It was listed as one of only two surviving stone arch bridges in the Upper Delaware corridor and for its intact traditional construction. Through traffic moved to Route 97 in 1939, but the bridge still serves local traffic and Scouts hiking to camps. Little else of the hamlet survives.","period_of_significance":"1896","architect_builder":"Hankins, William H. and Co., Tusten, NY","architectural_style":"OTHER / stone arch bridge","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Unaltered, in fair condition, and still in use as a vehicular bridge on unpaved roads; owned by the Town of Tusten and surrounded by Boy Scout camping land.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.198192-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00000839.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000839/43ee2a4a8c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000839/43ee2a4a8c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Charles Fulton","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bridge_over_the_Ten_Mile_River_(9404280988).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Charles Fulton</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bridge_over_the_Ten_Mile_River_(9404280988).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315056","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tusten_Stone_Arch_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7856842"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/tusten-stone-arch-bridge-00000839/"}
