It also shows how the road network developed in Hankins when the hamlet was a center of industry and recreation (Criterion A).","narrative":"Spanning Hankins Creek in a small hamlet on the Upper Delaware River, this stone arch bridge was built in 1905 by quarryman and mason John Inman. It is about 40 feet long with a roadway roughly 15 feet wide, a single round arch of mortared, partly dressed voussoirs, fieldstone spandrels and parapets, and bluestone coping. Inman was hired to build a road with arch bridges across Basket Creek and Hankins Creek, linking Hankins to Long Eddy, which topography and a rocky point had long kept isolated. The Basket Creek bridge was later bypassed and largely washed away in the 1942 flood, leaving Hankins as one of only two traditional stone arch bridges in the 74-mile river corridor. The bridge carried East Ridge Road until the road was rerouted in 1973. Local citizens pushed for its preservation, and the county stabilized the creek bank in 1999. It is listed for its engineering and its role in the community's development.","period_of_significance":"1905","architect_builder":"John Inman, builder","architectural_style":"OTHER / stone arch bridge","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Closed to vehicle traffic since 1973 and maintained for pedestrian use and passive recreation by Sullivan County and the Town of Fremont; wingwalls were rebuilt in 1999 to stabilize the banks.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.654355-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00000838.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000838/aee7ccc58e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000838/aee7ccc58e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hankins_Stone_Arch_Bridge_Apr_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hankins_Stone_Arch_Bridge_Apr_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315054","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hankins_Stone_Arch_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5648543"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/hankins-stone-arch-bridge-00000838/"}
