It is also the work of prolific architect Henry Dudley, who designed 162 churches, mostly in New York State. Unlike many of his stone churches, Dudley used brick here. The building retains a high level of integrity.","narrative":"St. Mark's Episcopal Church is a Gothic Revival church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls, New York, built in 1858-60 to designs by the architect Henry Dudley. Its light rose and orange brick walls, steeply pitched slate roof, buttresses, lancet windows and rose window follow the English parish church model. A freestanding four-stage bell tower connects to the nave by a low hyphen. Inside, a hammer beam truss roof spans the nave, and the tower holds chimes added in the 1870s. The building was enlarged over several decades, with a north aisle and transept in the 1860s, a longer chancel in 1890, and a parish hall in 1912-13. The parish, founded in 1833, built the church during the village's prosperous mill-era growth, with industrialist Walter A. Wood taking a leading role. The church is valued as a well-preserved example of Dudley's work, notable for his choice of brick instead of stone.","period_of_significance":"1858-c. 1913","architect_builder":"Dudley, Henry","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as a religious facility, the same as its historic function.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.530132-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00000836.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000836/35a9d9a849-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000836/35a9d9a849-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Mark%27s_Episcopal_Church,_Hoosick_Falls,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Mark%27s_Episcopal_Church,_Hoosick_Falls,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321301","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Mark%27s_Episcopal_Church_(Hoosick_Falls,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1451501"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rensselaer-county/st-marks-episcopal-church-00000836/"}
