They were left out of the original nomination but contribute to the property's significance in architecture and social history. Other outbuildings on the estate were already listed with the house complex.","narrative":"Two small farm outbuildings, a horse barn and a corn crib, have been added to the Hanckel-Barclay House property near Brevard in Transylvania County, North Carolina. Both date to about 1910-1920 and sit east of the main house beside a gravel drive, in a clearing on the south side of a pasture. The horse barn is a board-and-batten building with a gambrel roof, double doors facing east, small square openings in the side walls, and an interior divided into horse stalls with a loft above. The corn crib is a small rectangular wooden structure with a metal gable roof, open slatted walls, and fieldstone piers. The Barclay family had them built as part of their estate, which grew from land James Stuart Hanckel bought between 1856 and 1860. They were overlooked when the house complex was first listed in 1999, which already included a root cellar, garage, and two sheds. Adding them recognizes their contribution to the property's architecture and social history. The added area is less than one acre.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1910-ca. 1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.150566-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/9/7185/47718509/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/00000825.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000825/dc0a3a16da-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000825/dc0a3a16da-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Sybil Argintar Bowers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hanckel-Barclay_House_1999.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Sybil Argintar Bowers</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hanckel-Barclay_House_1999.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718509","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanckel-Barclay_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19986632"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/transylvania-county/hanckel-barclay-house-boundary-increase-00000825/"}
