It combines a cruciform plan, polychrome masonry walls, pointed arches, steep slate gable roofs and an all-stone steeple. It also retains substantial integrity of design and materials from its period of significance.","narrative":"Memorial Church of the Holy Cross, at 841 Bleecker Street in east Utica, is a stone church completed in 1891 and designed by architect and engineer James Constable, Jr. It began as an Episcopal mission founded in 1871 and sponsored by Grace Church. The cruciform building has rough-cut quarry stone walls trimmed in dark bluestone, staged buttresses, Gothic-arched windows, steep slate roofs and a corner bell tower topped by a stone steeple. Inside, oak pews, open trusses and stained glass survive largely unchanged. A stone wing for a choir room and apartment was added in 1932. The Episcopal parish merged with another congregation in 1957, and in 1960 the building was sold to a Ukrainian Orthodox congregation on the condition that it remain in religious use. That congregation made minor, reversible changes, including an iconostasis, and still uses the church. It is recognized as a well-preserved example of High Victorian Gothic church design and a landmark on Bleecker Street.","period_of_significance":"1891-1932","architect_builder":"James Constable, Jr. (Architect)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Gothic (High Victorian Gothic)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Remains in regular use for religious services by a Ukrainian Orthodox congregation, which acquired it in 1960 and continues to maintain it.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.187322-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00000823.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000823/4691fb28c6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000823/4691fb28c6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Agreen54","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Memorial_Church_of_the_Holy_Cross.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Agreen54</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Memorial_Church_of_the_Holy_Cross.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320225","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Church_of_the_Holy_Cross","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6815366"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/oneida-county/memorial-church-of-the-holy-cross-00000823/"}
